Checks for network Setup

Resolving network problems

Program does not run

If the program does not run there are three main causes:-

Security key is missing or not correctly inserted or not visible to the workstation

 Language files are missing

 Setup not complete

Check for the following problems before looking for Network related problems.

Check Server or Computer with the Network key is up and running.

Check Security key is in place and firmly inserted and is in the correct port.

Check Setup directory contains the language files.

Run the CHECK program (click on CHECK.EXE in the Program directory). If there is an X against the language files they are missing. The language files have the extension LNG, for example, 00.LNG.

Check all the program files are installed correctly.

Run the Check program. If there is an X against the Program files some files are missing or corrupt.

Note - where the Optimising program is installed on a Network server it cannot usually run from the Server console - but the Check program can be run at the server console by clicking on CHECK.EXE in the Program directory.

Install network key software as a Service

Running the licence manager as a service means it is available as soon as the operating system has initialised. To do this:-

- Install the Network key device driver

- From the Start button on the Windows Taskbar select the Run option

- Run the program HaspUserSetup e.g. N:\V12\NETKEY\HaspUserSetup.exe -i

If updating an existing system make sure that any Licence manager services that are running are stopped before installing HaspUserSetup

- Install the Licence Manager

Use the program LMSETUP for this.

The lmsetup file is located in the ..\NETWORKS\NETKEY folder of the distribution disk. Navigate to this folder by using Windows Explorer and double-click on the lmsetup application to run it. Follow the on-screen instructions. It is recommended that the licence manager runs with a '-highpriority' command line option. To specify this option, a 'custom' setup must be selected.

Select the Ok button to start the installation.

Custom setup

Other custom options are available via the LMSETUP program - try this first before using the NETHASP.INI configuration file.

The configuration file NETHASP.INI is on the CD-ROM. This file can be used for specific custom changes. The file is fully documented but it is best to refer to the Optimising program supplier before attempting a custom installation.

Custom installations are usually only required in a limited number of cases with more complex network setups.

Mapping the Server location at each Workstations

Each workstation must map a drive letter to the location on the server of the Optimising program and data directories etc.

Optimising Program paths are based on the drive letter, for example, N:\V12\LIBS (for the library data), where N: is the mapped drive letter on the Workstation

Where User profiles are on the Server and any workstation can access any user profile the mapped drive letter must be the same on each Workstation.

Other Network Problems

There are extra help files and utilities for simple checking of the Network key operation in the NETWORKS directory. These are on the CD-ROM as they are not copied with the basic Network Key files.

aksmon.exe - shows whether the Workstations can see the Licence manager. This can be run from the CD without installing. There is an accompanying help file.

ndiag32.exe - creates a file ndiag32.txt with details of the local computer setup. This program should be copied to the computer under test and run from that computer.

Nettest.exe - tests whether the Optimising software can see the Licence manager. The screen shows two panes - the upper pane shows the test results and the lower pane reports any errors. Press the START button to begin or repeat the test. If the Licence manager is not found this is reported as an error in the lower pane and the Start key is disabled.

If network key problems are not easily resolved by checking the procedures described in this document please contact the supplier of the Optimising program. Most suppliers have good experience of installing and running the Optimising program over a variety of different Networks.

Set Program files to read only - At the server, for safety, (after setup) set the attributes of the individual program files (EXE/DLL/HLP) in the Program directory to 'Read only'.

Uninstall

Use Add/Remove or click on the Uninstall shortcut to Uninstall the software. At the server this uninstalls the 'Program files'. At the Workstation with a 'client' install Uninstall removes the 'system files' at the workstation and does not affect the server.

If the licence manager is subsequently uninstalled, in may report an error message:

Operating system not supported

Error code 3 0 67 0

This error is expected and may be ignored.

Notes

- If the program ends unexpectedly or crashes in some way the network licence allocated to that user is typically available again within a few minutes. Use the Hasp Monitor utility to determine which users are currently accessing the program.
